The mission of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC) is to locate, preserve, and make available to researchers the documentary evidence of Houston's history. HMRC is located in the historic Julia Ideson Building. Created in 1976, HMRC furthers its mission by providing in-depth reference services using materials including the Texas and local history book collection, archives, photographs, architectural drawings, oral histories, and maps. Librarians and Archivists are responsible for arranging, preserving, and indexing the contents of these unique collections.
1. Astrodome Memories Project
HALAN needs students to research and obtain copyright permissions for an extensive collection of materials acquired through the Astrodome Memories Project. This project is a partnership with several Houston institutions to collect, preserve and promote the history of the Astrodome. To learn more about this project visit the Astrodome Memories Project page.
2. This Week in Texas Project
Cataloging and Metadata needs one student to look through issues of This Week In Texas (TWIT), a gay business and entertainment guide that was published weekly throughout Texas from 1975 to 2013. Tasks include cleaning up OCR text and updating individual page metadata with names and addresses of bars and businesses. The first year of TWIT is available at the Houston Area Digital Archives.
3. Architecture Project
The Houston Metropolitan Research Center’s (HMRC) Architectural Archivist is in need of a student to re-house architectural drawings of Houston buildings as well as structures designed by Houston-based architects. This includes updating descriptions of drawings for the Architectural Archives Database used in-house and by the public at the Architectural Archives Database. The architectural collections of HMRC reflect the development of the city’s built environment.
4. Archival Processing Project
The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC) is in need of a student to help with processing an archival collection from start to finish. This includes beginning reorganization at whatever stage materials currently exist, creating an inventory for the collection, and placing items in proper archival storage. For a sample of the types of materials housed at HMRC visit Houston Area Digital Archive.
5. Cataloguing and Metadata Project
Cataloging and Metadata is in need of a student to assist with searching and processing a collection of dissertations. The dissertations are primarily related to Texas and local history and are cataloged for research purposes of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center. The student will work with cataloging software to identify records for the dissertations and generate keywords and subjects to add to the catalog. The student will gain searching and subject analysis skills during the course of the semester as they process this diverse collection. Topics include: desegregation of schools and communities; environmental analysis; regional health factors; the George W. Bush administration, and immigration across Texas, among many others.
