Treating the Undocumented: A Case Study of Ben Taub Hospital ER

Austin Cao, a pre-med student and a class member in the Doerr Institute-funded Spring 2017 Medical Leadership course, produced a long-form audio essay for his final project.

Austin works as a Rice EMT and a volunteer at Ben Taub, where he learned from physicians about their challenges in treating undocumented patients at the institution. In his audio essay, he and the physicians he interviews explore the ways that the needs of this population bring to the surface challenges and opportunities for reflections on medical professionalism and ethics.
