Carlson Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship

Program Description:

The Humanities Research Center awards Summer Research Fellowships to undergraduates with a strong background in the humanities. The fellowships require up to 200 hours of work on a humanities research broadly conceived, to include research-informed work conducted in artistic disciplines. The student may lead the project under the guidance and mentorshop of a Humanities scholar, or the student may work with on a Humanities scholar's research project. Selected 2025 fellows will receive up to $3,500.

Eligibility:

Fellowships are awarded to select undergraduate students who have demonstrated significant academic achievement and considerable interest in humanities research, though they do not need to be a humanities major. Fellows must be enrolled at Rice in the Fall 2025 semester.

3. What do you plan to do during the fellowship?

  • How do you plan to use the time of the fellowship?
    • For research-based projects, do you want to conduct more research? Go to an archive? Time to read more objects or do a literature review? Write a manuscript? Revise your manuscript? All of the above?
    • For creative projects, do you plan to conduct research? Create artworks (e.g., time to shoot a film, paint, etc.)? All of the above?
  • How is the time allocated?

5. A list of ALL other fellowships, internships, and any and all funding you have applied for or have already received for summer 2025

6. Your unofficial transcript

7. An endorsement from a faculty member. The endorsement does not need to be a formal letter of recommendation—a paragraph should suffice. However, we ask that the faculty member indicate their knowledge of and involvement in the project thus far, how this fellowship will contribute to your scholarly and professional development, and their willingness to advise on the project.
