HRC Undergraduate Center Assistant

Position Summary 

The Humanities Research Center (HRC) is an internationally recognized hub that fosters innovative humanities and arts research at Rice University and builds collaborations with local, national, and global partners. 

The Center Assistant provides basic operational support to the HRC. They work under the supervision of the HRC's Center Administrator on tasks related to office management, events, and communications/outreach. 

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We will work with the selected candidate on a suitable starting date. 

Minimum skills required: 

  • Dependability and flexibility 
  • Ability to follow through and complete assigned tasks 
  • Good organizational skills 
  • Good verbal and written communication skills 
  • Good customer service skills 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel) and Google Workspace (e.g., Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets) 
  • Graphic design and photography skills are a plus but not necessary 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Humanities major, or minor with extensive familiarity with the humanities 

Essential functions: 

  • Provides support for the daily operations of the Humanities Research Center 
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of meetings and events, including scheduling internal meetings, making room reservations, ordering and/or receiving catering, connecting with and escorting vendors, and setting up meeting spaces 
  • Manages the office space of the HRC, including monitoring office inventory and maintaining the communal and storage spaces 
  • Performs clerical tasks as needed, including copying, collating, word processing, filing, and answering phones 
  • Runs errands and makes deliveries around the office or to external parties 
  • Develops marketing and communications materials (print, web, social media, etc.) 
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned 

Skills student-workers may develop: 

  • Interpersonal: stakeholder management, customer service, teamwork, collaboration 
  • Marketing & communications: event planning, coordination, and implementation; multimedia communications strategy and implementation; business communication (oral and written) 
  • Analytical: problem-solving, judgment, decision-making, planning 
  • Software: Adobe Suite, Drupal (CMS)

Starting Compensation: 

$15/h – $16/h, contingent on skills and experience 

Work schedule: 

  • Flexible, based on the student’s course schedule each semester 
  • Part-time: between 10 and 15 hours per week
