Lecture: Plotinus on Human Divinity

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Speaker: Damian Caluori from Trinity University

In Plato’s Theaetetus (176b) we are told that we should escape from here and become like God as far as possible. According to Plotinus, we do not need to become like God since we already are, in some sense, divine. This view leads to a number of questions: in what sense are we divine? Why does Plotinus believe that we are divine? Given that most human beings most of the time do not really behave in divine ways nor experience themselves as being such, we will need an explanation for this as well.
