Lecture: Shipwreck! Excavating the Gnalic, a 16th Century Merchant Ship lost off the Coast of Croatia

Friday, January 31, 2014

Speaker: Luis Filipe Viera de Castro from Texas A&M University

A large ship loaded with cargo from Venice and headed to Constantinople sank off Croatia in the winter of 1583. Found in the 1960s, the wreck is currently being investigated by a joint team from the University of Zadar and Texas A&M University, under the direction of Dr. Irena Radi?-Rossi. This talk presents the underwater archaeological excavation of the site and explores some of the theoretical questions raised during the recording of the shipwreck site.
