The HRC 2018-19 Rice Seminar “Waste” end of year conference is the “final product” of conversations over the course of the three cluster meetings, a consensus began to develop against certain formats: an overly expensive, academic edited collection, for example, or an expensive coffee table book with pretty pictures of waste, come to a greater sense of consensus around producing an interactive experience to provoke conversations about waste, one with a physical and hopefully also a digital (or web) component. The group tossed around ideas for something that would provoke insight and action but that wouldn’t be programmatic or polemical. Inspired by the Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, Yoko Ono’s Instruction Paintings, and most especially Marina Zurkow’s Investing in Futures, and produced an interactive “deck”.
This final meeting will include the creation of a companion to Investing in Futures. What are the concepts, facts, prompts, recipes, infrastructures, exercises, images, etc., one might assemble to provoke new ways of living with and as waste in all its many forms and temporalities?
